At Rewired Iowa, we’re not only here for emergency electrical service and electrical repairs, we can help make your home more energy efficient, smarter, and safer too. We are West Des Moines’ most reliable residential electrician. We do electrical troubleshooting, electrical installations, electrical maintenance, and even low-voltage work including: Networking, cable, phone, and antennas. Let us know if we can help you with any of the following home electrical upgrades:
1. Electrical Panel Upgrades
Electrical panels are the heart of your home’s entire electrical system. Electrical panel upgrades are one of the most common residential electrical upgrades we offer. Your electrical panel is where power is received then distributed to circuits and delivered to each outlet, light, or switch. Many older homes have outdated electrical panels. If the service panel is rated at less than 100 amps, or is a known deficient panel such as an FPE, Zinsco, or Sylvania, it should be replaced. A newer panel with more amps and updated circuit breakers can help your home’s electrical system run more efficiently and safely. This can help prevent overloading and electrical fires, and may even save you money on energy.
2. Adding More Outlets
Can you ever have enough outlets? We can easily add outlets with USB connections, hidden power banks, pop-up outlets, outlets in floors, outdoor outlets, outlets in eaves for custom or seasonal lighting, etc. You can also upgrade the look of your outlets with custom switches and switch plates. Choose from a variety of colors and materials including stainless steel and stone. We can also make sure your outlets are safe and up to code by upgrading to GFCI outlets. Did you know outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and outdoors must be GFCI protected for safety.
3. GFCI Outlet Installation
The ground-fault circuit interrupter, or GFCI, is a fast-acting circuit breaker designed to shut off electric power in the event of a ground-fault within as little as 1/100th of a second. This prevents accidental electrocution. GFCI outlets are the safest receptacles for residential use. That’s why they are required by code in bathrooms, garages, crawl spaces, basements, laundry rooms, and areas where a water source is present.
4. Smart Outlet Installation
With all the electronic devices in our homes, there’s always something that needs to be charged. You can upgrade your outlets to include USB ports built right in. There are a variety of options available. Choose from outlets with two standard USB-A ports, or a single USB-A and a single USB-C port built in. USB outlets are available in a variety of amperages to support the power needs of different devices. You could even replace some outlets or add another with a USB-only receptacle, which can come with up to four USB charging ports. We can also install smart outlets that can track your power usage and can be programmed to turn on and off at specific times.
5. Smart Home Features
With the increasing number of devices that need to be charged, like smartphones, laptops, and tablets, it may be a good idea to install charging stations in your home. Charging stations can free up outlets and improve a home’s appearance. A licensed electrician can install charging stations in suitable areas of the house. Kitchens are the favorite place to add a charging station.
6. Custom Lighting
Dimming your lights by about 50% can help your light bulbs last longer and reduce your electricity usage by up to 30%. Dimming lights can also set a mood in a room, for instance, you can create a romantic candlelit dinner in the dining room just by turning a knob.
7. Surge Protectors
Surge protectors, also called surge suppressors, protect expensive electronics from power surges, but did you also know they protect your home’s LED lighting as well? TVs, computers, gaming consoles, phones, LED lights and more can be protected during storms when they are plugged into outlets with surge protection. We can even install whole-home surge protectors
8. Dedicated Circuits
With so many people working from home these days, many like the peace of mind they get from installing a dedicated circuit for their computer. A dedicated computer circuit has its own circuit breaker in your electrical panel which ensures that your computer(s) are able to access the energy they need without overloading your system, losing power, blowing a fuse, or tripping a breaker. The benefits of dedicated computer circuits include increased productivity, reduced “electrical noise” from other appliances on shared circuits, which can result in surges, and the risk of electrical outages.
9. Electrical Upgrades
Older homes may have knob and tube wiring, which limits the amount of power available. Knob and tube wiring doesn’t have a ground wire, which can increase the risk of shock or fire. Additionally, because it has aged, the rubberized cloth insulation has become brittle and disintegrated, exposing the wires and increasing the risk of fire, shock, or short circuits. Knob and tube wiring isn’t moisture safe, so it can be an electrical hazard in kitchens and bathrooms. It’s also incompatible with modern three-prong appliances and devices. Insurance companies may charge higher premiums or refuse to insure homes with outdated wiring. Upgrading your home’s wiring can improve safety and efficiency, increasing the amount of power available for appliances.
